2003 OLIVE W. GARVEY FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION -- May 1st Deadline Approaches
The Independent Institute is accepting entries for the 2003 Olive W. Garvey Fellowship Competition until May 1, 2003.
This year the Garvey Fellowship Competition -- an international essay contest -- has two divisions -- college students (including undergraduate and graduate students, law students, medical students, etc.) and junior university and college faculty members (i.e., non-tenured teachers). Both tracks are open to entrants across the globe. To encourage and reward young scholars, entrants may not be over 35 years old.
This year entrants are required to write about the following
quotation from 19th century British advocate of trade and peace,
Richard Cobden:
"The progress of freedom depends more upon the maintenance of peace and the spread of commerce and the diffusion of education than upon the labor of Cabinets or Foreign Offices."
Students up to the age of 35
First Prize: $2,500
Second Prize: $1,500
Third prize: $1,000
Junior faculty members not yet tenured
First Prize: $10,000
Second Prize: $5,000
Third Prize: $1,500
